Yes, it's sad isn't it - the cruelty that went into starting the sugar industry in the first place is as bad as the horror involved in mining diamonds! If you haven't read or heard of it before, one of the most definitive books on the history of sugar is anthropologist Sidney Mintz's work, "Sweetness and Power: the Place of Sugar in Modern History". It's a fascinating discussion of the not-so-sweet role this substance had in slavery and industrialization. I confess to having a very sweet tooth!
