I fully agree with what you have to say and don't think that I absolved the consumer of responsibility! However, my frustration lies in the carelessness of the retailers - especially in third world countries where already starving people use what little money they have to buy almost nutrionless junk.

People wouldn't demand junk if they knew how bad it really is for them - on the other hand, you are dead right, they are free to choose. Or are they?

As far as the lawsuits go, of course it shouldn't be, but too often it is whether we like it or not and it wastes desperately needed resources ..... don't you think?

<a href="" rel="nofollow">
With all due respect to the author of this post, most people have some degree of choice when it comes to what they eat. And many of those people choose, for their own reasons, to regularly eat foods that are calorie dense, but not nutritionally dense. This is unfortunate, but it is their choice.

As long as people demand, through their buying behavior, that these types of foods be available, food producers will produce them. They are meeting the consumer's need, as evidenced by consumer buying behavior.

Does this absolve food producers of some degree of responsibility for ensuring that their products are not unhealthy? Absolutely not. But in many cases where food companies have taken steps to improve the "healthiness" of their products, consumers have voted with their pocketbooks and those foods have remained on the shelf.

Consumers must accept responsibility for both what foods and how much of those foods they choose to consume. This is not nor should it be the responsibility of government, nor should it be fodder for surious lawsuits; this is an individual choice. Consumers need to take responsibility for their food choices. It is through their actions that change in the quality of our food options will occur.
