Restaurant Review: The Kitchen in Cape Town

7 CommentsToday we bring you our first ever restaurant review from Cape Town, South Africa. In future our reviews will come from all over the world so if you’ve eaten somewhere special and think it’s worth reviewing, take a few photographs and tell us about it. We don’t want to hear about your bad experiences and have no interest in mediocre or poor restaurants – but if it’s really good and worth visiting, we’re interested and would love to hear from you. Going out for a quick lunch in Cape Town usually requires quite a bit planning if you’re in no mood for a sandwich
or a burger and if you’re a little out of the way and have to drive, it’s almost impossible – not because there’s nowhere to go, of course there is, but because lunch won’t be quick and parking in the CBD is a nightmare. Have I got news for you! Yesterday I was treated to lunch at The Kitchen in Woodstock, a comfortable eatery tucked out of the way in Sir Lowry Road – in fact it’s so out of the way that unless you know where it is, you’ll drive right past it. If you do recognise it by the milling of people outside the door
around lunch time, you’ll be greeted by wafts of cinnamon coated something and the aroma of fresh bread rolls before a sense of calm and extreme hunger descends upon you. You will not be greeted by a Maitre d’ and your tables will have no white tablecloths, there are no wine lists, no chef’s recommendations and no silver service. You will be offered an antique plate and required to fill it with a selection of the most unusual and most interesting salads and foods that I have come across in a good while. Huge bowls of salads jostle for position with piled high platters of moist chicken breasts, honey and mustard roasted sausages and mountains of just-fried crispy bacon. For those that don’t eat meat, platters of avocado (sensibly peeled and cut in half), thick blocks of creamy home made feta and as much roasted aubergine as your heart desires will fill the gap. The food is excellent and mostly
healthy. The plates are huge and the three generous portions of salad (bulgur wheat and lentil with a touch of mint, roasted sweet potato and baby spinach leaf and thinly sliced raw cauliflower) allowed plenty of space for me to fill up on avocado, bacon, chicken, feta and a few brown roasted onions. A vegetarian plate costs R40.00 and if you add meat, it will add another R10.00 to your bill. For those of you looking for something a little more substantial, try the grilled chicken, the special of the day (ours was tomato bredie*) or a steaming hot plate of minestrone and if you’re in hurry and need something to take back to the office, order one of the super fresh bread-rolls with as many toppings as you like. For the sweet-toothed there are a variety of pastries, pies, cakes or Florentines to enjoy with your coffee.
